Founder of NARF Janessa Rhodes-Dabler

Janessa founded the Nike Animal Rescue Foundation after learning about an abandoned dog found in a ditch with her litter of puppies. Motivated by compassion, Janessa enlisted her mother to help rescue the dog, who was later named Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory, a fitting name after all she had endured. At the time, Nike had been shot in the jaw, was severely emaciated, and infested with worms, necessitating extensive and costly medical care.

The San Jose Mercury News published an article highlighting the plight of this beautiful white German Shepherd, which led to an overwhelming response in donations. Saving Nike marked just the beginning of Janessa's journey. The surplus donations were pivotal in launching NARF, and the rest, as they say, is history.

“Day after day, week after week; Puppies and kittens are dumped at my feet.

A puppy runs up and wags its tail; at finding him a home I must not fail.

The kittens they frolic and play and purr; why is their future so insecure.

People are the reason I do know why; most puppies and kittens are born just to die.

The answer is simple I’m sure you’ll agree; just spay and neuter for a nominal fee.

God made us shepherds of all creatures on earth;

We must lead by example beginning at birth.”

Thank you Janessa!

The happy tails of Linda Pope

Today we come together to honor our dear friend Linda, a passionate animal lover whose unwavering dedication made a significant impact on the lives of countless animals. In 1985, Linda was instrumental in founding the Nike Animal Rescue Foundation (NARF) in San Jose, where she opened her home to become the first foster caregiver for the organization. Through her compassion, Linda fostered over 4,500 dogs—many of whom had experienced neglect, abuse, and a lack of love—nurturing them until they were ready to find their forever homes.

As the former President of NARF, Linda later relocated to Washington, supported by her incredible family, to help establish Nike North. Even then, she continued her involvement as a board member, steadfastly supporting NARF's mission. Linda's passion for animal welfare remained strong throughout her life, and she dedicated herself to this vital work until her last days.

Linda was deeply loved by her husband, Jerry; her daughter, Terri; her entire family; and her two cherished dogs, Rena and Luna. They stood by her side, offering love and support until the very end.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Linda and her family for their immense love, dedication, and sacrifices that allowed her to be the voice for the voiceless. Her legacy will continue to inspire all of us.

We love you Linda.

The Happy Tails of Evonne Phelps

Evonne was a founding member of Nike Animal Rescue Foundation and served as the first Vice President of NARF. Evonne worked tirelessly her entire life for the all the animals in our community. She was a strong advocate for giving dogs a second chance, and would take dogs out of the shelter when they were getting close to euthanasia, and foster them at her house until they found their furever homes.

Evonne noted the non-stop rising prices of veterinary bills and felt strongly that she wanted to help assure everyone could afford spay and neuter services for their pets. It was Evonne’s dream to open a non-profit Spay Clinic. In 2003 a veterinary practice went up for sale in Fremont and it was Evonne who came up with the money through selling off some property and selling weekends at Kennedy’s flea market. Because of this- For Paws has sterilized close to 50,000 dogs, cats and rabbits

In additional to all her tireless work with NARF, Evonne also sat on the board, volunteered in the office and handled all the financials for For Paws for close to 20 years, into her 90s, to help keep fees down for everyone. While she could have retired and traveled she chose to stay active, serving the community.

While no longer with us, Evonne’s presence and generosity is still felt today, yesterday and everyday.

Your presence is sadly missed every day.

Thank you Evonne!
